The Finger Wharf at Woolloomooloo, built between 1910-1915 by the Sydney Harbour Trust, narrowly avoided demolition in the late 1980s and was transformed into a boutique hotel, apartments, and hospitality precinct, the Wharf Apartment. Its heritage and cultural significance make it a well-known landmark in Sydney. The Wharf apartments, constructed in the late 1990s, lacked charm initially but have become highly sought after for their unique character, stunning views, and central location by 2023.
Characterized by its historical architecture featuring steel trusses and voluminous ceilings, the apartment boasts a view across the wharf to the city. The challenge was to design a spacious one-bedroom apartment within a tight budget, retaining the existing character while creating a light, relaxed atmosphere reminiscent of a holiday retreat. Through collaborative effort with the client, mechanical services were adapted to meet heritage regulations. The design incorporated white steel and glass doors instead of solid walls to maintain connectivity and maximize views.
The interior was refurbished with limed oak parquetry flooring, Savannah marble kitchen countertops, and a predominantly white color scheme, complemented by simple linen sofas, canvas and chrome chairs, and concrete tables. The emphasis was on the external view, reflecting the maritime history of the location. The redesign prioritized openness and connection between spaces, allowing the view to be appreciated from anywhere within the apartment. Ultimately, living in this historical space with its breathtaking view is about the external landscape rather than the internal environment.
