Casa en los Cocos by Ludwig Godefroy Architecture

Casa en los Cocos by Ludwig Godefroy Architecture, situated in Mérida – Yucatán, Mexico, is an architectural project deeply influenced by the dimensions of its land, measuring 70 meters in length and 8 meters in width. The elongated shape of the plot creates a striking perspective effect upon entering the site, which is emphasized by a carefully designed water feature traversing the entire property. Inspired by prehispanic architecture, the project comprises a series of pavilions organized around a central water mirror and swimming pool.
Two bedroom pavilions flank the central void, creating a spacious and protected area at the heart of the residence. The design aims to blend indoor and outdoor spaces seamlessly, allowing the garden to envelop the inhabitants and every corner of the house. Central to the design philosophy is the concept of simplicity, where the focus is on elemental elements and the elimination of unnecessary features. This simplicity extends to the choice of materials, with concrete, wood, and stone dominating the construction.
These materials are selected for their ability to age gracefully, adding to the character of the architecture over time. The project prioritizes the creation of an intimate central gathering space, serving as the social hub of the residence. This open agora connects the private areas of the house while blurring the boundary between indoors and outdoors. The absence of traditional facades underscores the idea of the garden as the primary living space, inviting inhabitants to wander and meditate within its confines.
Ultimately, Casa en los Cocos embraces the passage of time as an integral aspect of its design, incorporating the concept of “patina of time” into its architectural language. By embracing simplicity and elemental materials, the project aims to create a timeless space that evolves gracefully with age.
