Dutch designer Niels Maier revitalizes a 1970s building in Sittard, Limburg, the Stoned House, bringing “authenticity and soul” to the once-dark and compartmentalized structure. Tasked with transforming the home for contemporary living, Maier focused on creating an intimate family environment through a tactile palette and strategic light integration.
The interiors are finished in natural clay plaster, which provides a soft canvas for the changing shadows of light throughout the day, transitioning from bright mornings to cozy evenings. Seamlessly matched microcement floors contribute to the home’s monolithic and refined aesthetic. Key design features include skylights and expansive full-height openings that draw in light and views of the landscape, while glass partitions and internal windows illuminate darker areas, enhancing the overall brightness of the space.
The double-height lounge showcases a harmonious blend of new and vintage furniture, reflecting Maier’s signature style. Tactile elements such as linen sheers and a slimline fireplace add warmth and beauty to the minimalistic design. Overall, Maier’s thoughtful approach not only opens up the house but also fosters a deep connection with nature, creating a welcoming and livable home for the family.
