PN Penthouse by Vincent Van Duysen Architects epitomizes a seamless fusion of nature and contemporary design, epitomizing ‘the art of living well’ in Antwerp’s Nieuw Zuid neighborhood. Spanning 365 square meters indoors with an additional 160 square meters of outdoor terrace space, the penthouse reflects the timeless ethos of the globally renowned architecture practice.
Commissioned in 2016, the project embarked on a six-year journey to craft a space that embraces VVDA’s contemporary design language while responding directly to its surroundings. Inspired by influences ranging from Luis Barragan’s Chromatic work to De Stijl/Neoplasticism, the design evolved to prioritize an open plan layout around technical cores and integrated patios, offering panoramic views of the river Schelde and Antwerp’s cityscape. Custom-made and VVDA-designed furniture, alongside vintage pieces, imbue the space with character and style, seamlessly blending functionality with optimal planning.
Two strategically placed outdoor patios infuse natural light and greenery, honoring the client’s familial roots in a nature-rich region. Materials like terrazzo, wood, and plaster create a cohesive atmosphere, while the kitchen, dining area, and library serve as focal points, seamlessly connecting indoor and outdoor spaces. Vincent Van Duysen emphasizes the penthouse’s aim for functionality, comfort, and harmonious material textures, fostering symbiotic relationships between various elements. The kitchen, centrally positioned, serves as a gathering point, while the library, designed for an art and literature enthusiast, integrates seamlessly with the floor plan.
PN Penthouse stands as a testament to VVDA’s design philosophy, epitomizing the art of living well by marrying modernity with natural elements. From the serene escape of the smaller front patio to the intimate sanctuary of the rear patio, the penthouse invites light, softness, and greenery into the lives of its inhabitants, overlooking the bustling city below with pride and elegance.
