The Strandgade Apartment, designed by David Thulstrup, is a stunning architectural transformation of a 218-year-old hide warehouse at Strandgade 104 in Copenhagen. This renovation repurposes the industrial space into four luxurious apartments, blending historical preservation with contemporary design. Thulstrup uses a palette of natural materials, including Dinesen wood planks and Sorensen Leather, to highlight the building’s heritage.
The leather, sourced from top Danish producers, references the warehouse’s original function while adding warmth to the interiors. Thulstrup emphasizes respecting the building’s history by using original materials like rendered walls, pine planks, and Finnish stone in a modern context. Large windows offer beautiful views of both the historic canal and the vibrant city, creating a seamless connection between the past and present. The transformation preserves key structural elements, such as exposed pine beams and brick walls, while incorporating modern amenities.
A central core houses essential functions, such as a stairwell, kitchen, and bathrooms, maintaining the open space concept. The project includes three single-floor apartments and one two-level penthouse, along with a ground-floor common area featuring a sauna and entertainment spaces, leading to a private courtyard and marina berths. The design carefully avoids dividing the space into rooms, instead using two central cubes to house functional elements. This approach preserves the building’s structural integrity and ensures it remains true to its heritage listing. Set for completion in February 2024, the Strandgade Apartment exemplifies a harmonious blend of conservation and modern living, offering a unique “new old” address in Copenhagen’s Christianshavn district.
