Elsternwick House by Fiona Lynch
A magnificent Victorian home in Elsternwick welcomes another new young family, with a contemporary re-imagining of colors and furniture, that respectfully highlight the historic and idiosyncratic architectural features.
“The house revealed itself as we drew on its era-defining hallmarks for different guidance. A commanding original fireplace in deep russet marble informed our choice of soft blue for the surrounding walls, whilst the soaring ceiling inspired elegant velvet curtains in unexpected tobacco. This considered approach ensured the wonderfully resolved marriage of new and old.
As the client was encouraging of our exploration of color, we took an evolutionary approach from room to room. Soft, earthy clay in the lounge melds into rusty brown in the adjacent study; through to a dining room swathed in striking blue.
The careful selection of furniture and art was an important factor in readying the home for its contemporary chapter. As the client was passionate about understanding the history of each piece, we established a unique narrative for each room, from the sculptural Serge Mouille pendants in the bedroom and lounge, to the refined Pietro Russo dining table and elegant Charlotte Perriand chairs.
Despite their contemporary aesthetic, the intervention of these iconic pieces is at harmony with the home’s historic character, bound by a timeless reverence for materiality and proportion.”
