Nestled within leafy East Melbourne, the brief for this heritage renovation, the East Melbourne Residence by Hecker Guthrie, was to create a series of rich interior spaces that flow seamlessly into one another. East Melbourne Residence is both a sensitive reflection of its Victorian heritage and a joyful response to the residents – and their playful approach to design.
Drawing inspiration from the building’s original architecture, heritage elements from the 1864 build are captured with an integrated approach between the contemporary and the existing. Arched windows that line the exterior of the building provide a strong foundation for the interconnectedness throughout. The aim of the practice is to create spaces that are endearing and beautiful, where the feeling speaks louder than the furnishings and the levels of charm and comfort outweigh the instant gratification of the merely new.
