In the center of Maastricht, Netherlands, three Gothic churches peer over the shoulder of a brick residence that can be traced back to the 13th century. Niels Maier of Studio Niels designed the monochrome house, guesthouse and surrounding landscape. Niels had to design the residence in order to share a common interest in honoring the intricacies of the original buildings and dissembling parts that were insensitively added.
What Niels and the owners wanted was a crisp and calm atmosphere achieving that by having a monochrome palette and minimalist opulence. Niels started with opening the master bedroom suite, living and kitchen spaces and had modified the circular, tiled ‘loggia’ to create a dining room connected to the living room. Niels says furniture was selected for its aesthetic and functional value and one of these key objects is the LC2 Poltrona Armchair by Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand in custom black velvet from Raf Simons
