Bough Terrace by Tuckey Design Studio, nestles in Knightsbridge, where this Victorian mews house conceals a striking contemporary interior. The renovation embraces the home’s historic character while integrating modern design elements, creating a seamless dialogue between past and present. The project reveals the building’s historic “bones,” with original gnarled timber floor joists and roof trusses celebrated alongside newly introduced solid timber.
This interplay begins in the basement as a single timber post that transforms progressively through three floors into a lightweight lattice canopy at roof level, showcasing a sculptural evolution. A centerpiece of the design is the deep midnight blue staircase. Floating off the walls, it creates the illusion of levitation, with its stained plywood grain adding a dynamic texture. This staircase connects all levels, culminating in a triple-height stairwell inspired by Japanese joinery.
The thoughtful design extends to the handcrafted elements, including benches formed from repurposed timber joists, merging functionality with heritage. The kitchen and study are illuminated by a large aperture, drawing natural light deep into the home. Exposed beams in the kitchen juxtapose old and new, further emphasizing the home’s layered narrative. Bough Terrace beautifully melds Victorian heritage with contemporary craftsmanship, offering a space that honors its history while embracing modernity.
