Lithuania-based design studio AKTA reimagine a heritage-listed Art Nouveau apartment in Riga, Latvia. This apartment sits in a protected Jugendstil building from the early 20th century. The team at AKTA have successfully envisioned the client’s ideal for modern-day living, while still celebrating the home’s original features. Dark oak chevron floorboards form the base of the home, replacing the original flooring which was in poor condition.
The proportions and spatial layout of the home remain unchanged; the kitchen, dining and living room are combined, with the workspace behind preserved original glass doors. Throughout the home, the building’s authentic details have been restored such as the cornices, ceiling roses and interior panelling. The bathroom provides a refreshing wave of modernity with matt black wall-mounted tapware and mirrored cabinetry. The architectural team has attempted to keep the balance between the massive volumes of furniture filling the large space and elegantly decorative interior elements.
