Refuge with a view by A. Kontodimas Architects

Nestled in the rocks of a steep slope on the western side of Tinos, the refuge with a view by A. Kontodimas Architects, overlooks the island capital on one side and two peaceful coves on the other, with the Cycladic islands visible in the background. Its main feature is the use of natural materials, blending into the terrain.
The house was designed as the summer refuge for a family of five, from France. The position of the long and narrow property at the top of the cliff designated the development of the main house in a confined area, at the edge of the site. The main idea was to create a cross-ventilated hallway cutting through the volumes, distributing circulation from the south entrance through the lounge and dining area to the open kitchen at the north end. Consequently, the master bedroom on one side and the rest of the bedrooms on the other enjoy the required privacy.
The cobbled hallway, sheltered under wooden trusses on the roof, quickly reveals the sweeping views from the entrance through the opposite end of the house and provides easy access to the stairs leading to the lower level, to the guest room, and to the facilities. Metal frames are chosen for those specific hallway openings, enhancing the transparent feel of the space, and framing the view from every direction. Southwestern orientation created the need for shaded areas in the front of the house. The pool area, adjacent to the outdoor lounge and dining table pergola, enjoys the surrounding views.
