The architect Hans Verstuyft has undertaken to restore a historical residence that dates back to the late 19th century and it is located in Ghent, which is one of the most historical cities of Belgium, into a modern house but preserving almost all of its architectural history. Due to the fact that it is has been damaged by reduced maintenance it has preserved  its original features.
The back of the building was almost completely destroyed, allowing the design team to redesign the face by adding a very contemporary touch. At the same time, he joined the main building with an adjoining house that kept the wagons and redesigned as a spacious kitchen.
Two extensions made of steel and large glazed surfaces that accommodate a small veranda and a dining room allow direct contact with the garden and the transfer between different volumes.
The renewal is intense but so discreet that the authentic form prevails. Additions like the new floor or oak roof are specially designed, while the materials and colors support and highlight the original architecture. Where it was possible, old layers of color were retained after special treatment, in an attempt to keep the old patina alive.
