Adytum Spa in Canberra by Pattern Studio

Adytum is a new Australian wellness brand, designed by Sydney-based Pattern Studio, informed and guided by a philosophical underpinning; the brand exists to encourage and cultivate practices of meaningful ritual. The brand has launched a semi-permanent library and exhibition space in Canberra’s Lonsdale Street. Paying tribute to the repose and intellectual nourishment one receives from the written word, the Adytum Library stocks a collection of design, art, craft, urbanism, landscape, and architecture titles.
The serenely subdued interior was conceived to pay homage to the reverence of great libraries. The space consists of a large central island; whose surfaces and softened edges have been rendered in a natural plaster and finished in beeswax. The designers were tasked with executing a fitout with a minimal environmental footprint. Their response included comprising the island’s structure of reclaimed MDF, and finishing the unit in natural plaster and wax.
Display elements include stone offcuts sourced from local stonemasons and industrial display plinths were made using construction site waste. The multi-sensory library experience includes a custom herbal tea blend offering and the subtle fragrance of Adytum’s own incense wafts throughout. The experience Pattern has created is refined, minimal, verging on monastic; a taste of what is to come in the brand’s future salon.
