Originate Architects and GL Studio designed this beautiful Little Venice residence, in the Little Venice conservation area of London. Originate and GL combined a pair of Grade II listed mid-19th Century semi-detached houses to form a Victorian stucco-fronted villa of three storeys plus a basement. The property itself, previously formed from two adjoining townhouses required complete restoration, having undergone successive decades of alteration resulting in the almost complete loss of all internal architectural detailing.
Original features were reinstated and new fireplaces and openings created in keeping with the historical period, yet fulfilling the needs of a modern family. New joinery units were designed by Originate using a unique finish to enhance the natural grain of the timber. The color palette is fairly neutral in order to complement the client’s extensive art and furniture collection. Beautifully appointed furniture, including mid-century pieces by Jorge Zalszupin and Pierre Jeanneret, quietly defer to space and complement artworks by Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Alexander Calder, and Celso Renato. New joinery was designed with a deliberately contemporary aesthetic; a strategic approach enabling a clear reading of both the building’s history and its 21st-century use.
