Wespi de Meuron Romeo Architects transformed an existing historical building into the House ME. The historic building in Brissago Piodina, featuring a vineyard and panoramic views of Lake Maggiore and mountains, undergoes a sensitive transformation to unveil and enhance its architectural qualities. Previously affected by interventions like an oversized terrace and plastering, the project aims to bring out the obscured original charm.
The reconfiguration involves relocating the living/dining areas and kitchen to the basement, establishing a direct connection to the garden, and allowing removal of the inappropriate upper-floor terrace. Creating a double-height living space fosters dynamic spatial communication and optimal lighting between floors. Strategic interventions include opening up the bathroom and staircase area on the upper floor to visually connect with the beautiful roof truss, enhancing the experience of this architectural feature.
While maintaining existing window openings on the upper floors, the lowest floor introduces three modern openings for improved light and views, seamlessly integrating with the surroundings. The restoration involves removing non-historic plaster to expose natural stone walls, reflecting the original aesthetic seen in many village houses. New elements like windows, floors, and walls adhere to current energy standards. Preserving intermediate floors and showcasing old wooden beams maintains the historical character.
Noteworthy is the replacement of the basement’s vaulted ceiling with a concrete one to accommodate a new lift. Overall, the project delicately balances preservation and modernization, uncovering the building’s inherent charm while meeting contemporary standards for energy efficiency and functionality.
